More Good News on Americans and Abortion22 January
When Barack Obama stepped into the presidency and when the conservative movement seemed to collapse and the economy tumbled and the People's Republic of the United States loomed--I found myself in the position of assuring my pro-life friends that the future was bright. Whatever the laws, whatever Obama administration policy, whatever abortion trends the poor economy might unleash, I knew we were winning hearts and minds on the mater of abortion. The Pew Forum confirmed it. Even the statistics kept by some abortion clinics confirmed it.
But many of my pro-life friends felt that the apocalypse was near. They cancelled fundraising events. They cut programs. They began to conduct themselves like prophets in exile--"there is none righteous, no not one."
It really is time for this foolishness to stop. Once again, we have surveys reporting that America is moving pro-life. The statistical fact is that a vast majority of Americans believe that abortion is wrong. As a recent poll confirms, "'Millennials' (those 18-29) consider abortion to be "morally wrong" even more (58%) than Baby Boomers (those 45-64) (51%). Generation X (those 30-44) are similar to Millennials (60% see abortion as "morally wrong"). More than 6 in 10 of the Greatest Generation (those 65+) feel the same."
Astonishing, isn't it, and in an age when all things traditional values-oriented are supposed to be in decline.
I want to suggest a truth here. Could it be that the very conservatives and Religious Right folks and traditional values crowd who believe that government ought to be contained so that real life can go on unfettered--could it be that this very crowd actually has too much faith in the power of government and Washington and even the dreaded liberals? Could it be that we forget the power of culture--which in America is turning pro-life--and we over-focus on laws and politicians and think tanks that spout a pro-abortion line?
When you go to church this weekend, you should find that volunteer at the local crisis pregnancy center or the family that took in an unwanted child or the woman who regularly gives her abortion-horror-story talk and you should give them all a hug and a word of thanks. They are changing culture--minds, hearts, worldviews, beliefs that lead to action--and babies are living in America as a result.
Come home, pro-lifers. Don't have more confidence in the state than the statists do. Believe in your cause. Believe in the power of your message. Have faith in fair-minded Americans. And, yes, most vital of all, have faith in your God.
